{"id":1610,"date":"2021-04-30T15:09:14","date_gmt":"2021-04-30T14:09:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/remotion.no\/?p=1610"},"modified":"2021-05-05T11:48:19","modified_gmt":"2021-05-05T10:48:19","slug":"successful-technology-qualification","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/remotion.no\/pt\/news\/successful-technology-qualification\/","title":{"rendered":"Successful technology qualification"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Video by: Aker BP ASA. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Technology in the Real and Imperfect World&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1386\" height=\"778\" src=\"http:\/\/remotion2.usernet.hu\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/image-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1612\" srcset=\"https:\/\/remotion.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/image-1.jpeg 1386w, https:\/\/remotion.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/image-1-908x510.jpeg 908w, https:\/\/remotion.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/image-1-487x273.jpeg 487w, https:\/\/remotion.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/image-1-435x245.jpeg 435w, https:\/\/remotion.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/image-1-345x195.jpeg 345w, https:\/\/remotion.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/image-1-365x205.jpeg 365w, https:\/\/remotion.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/image-1-320x180.jpeg 320w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1386px) 100vw, 1386px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Figure&nbsp;1: The messy truth of a windy environment.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although taking technology from the workshop&nbsp;and&nbsp;into the real world is often&nbsp;one of the more difficult stages of&nbsp;the development process, it is also arguably one of the most important.&nbsp;Technology cannot exist in a&nbsp;vacuum and&nbsp;testing how it functions in the real and imperfect world is&nbsp;essential&nbsp;for a&nbsp;reliable result.&nbsp;This is a core philosophy for us&nbsp;here&nbsp;at Remotion, and&nbsp;during late April we finished a&nbsp;weeklong&nbsp;test of our RoboCoat system&nbsp;out in the&nbsp;field.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the uninitiated, the RoboCoat system&nbsp;is a complete surface treatment solution which focuses on increased efficiency and&nbsp;reduced environmental pollution&nbsp;using magnetic robots.&nbsp;Old paint is removed from the surface using Ultra-High Pressure&nbsp;washing and rust is removed using sand blasting.&nbsp;All the while the waste material is collected and stored so that it can be handled properly&nbsp;later.&nbsp;Minimum spills to the environment.&nbsp;Once the surface is prepared, a new coat of paint is applied.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1386\" height=\"778\" src=\"http:\/\/remotion2.usernet.hu\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/image.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1611\" srcset=\"https:\/\/remotion.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/image.jpeg 1386w, https:\/\/remotion.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/image-908x510.jpeg 908w, https:\/\/remotion.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/image-487x273.jpeg 487w, https:\/\/remotion.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/image-435x245.jpeg 435w, https:\/\/remotion.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/image-345x195.jpeg 345w, https:\/\/remotion.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/image-365x205.jpeg 365w, https:\/\/remotion.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/image-320x180.jpeg 320w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1386px) 100vw, 1386px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Figure<\/em><strong><em> <\/em><\/strong><em>2: SW Magellan part-way through the process of getting a new coat of paint.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The test was performed on the SW Magellan, currently in layup in&nbsp;Farsund, Norway.&nbsp;This&nbsp;was an ideal test location for the&nbsp;system, as it allowed us to simulate many of the difficulties&nbsp;we would face in a real offshore scenario, while still having easy access to inspect the results and&nbsp;the ability to fix problems that arose during the test.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And problems there were.&nbsp;The test was off to a rough start with several problems&nbsp;arose during the first day&nbsp;alone mainly on the rental equipment deck spread interfaces towards the test location.&nbsp;This highlights the importance of&nbsp;such tests&nbsp;though; our engineers and technicians were able to identify the&nbsp;cause of the problems and implement fixes and improvements on the go, and the test could carry on.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1386\" height=\"780\" src=\"http:\/\/remotion2.usernet.hu\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/image-3.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1620\" srcset=\"https:\/\/remotion.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/image-3.jpeg 1386w, https:\/\/remotion.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/image-3-908x510.jpeg 908w, https:\/\/remotion.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/image-3-487x273.jpeg 487w, https:\/\/remotion.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/image-3-435x245.jpeg 435w, https:\/\/remotion.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/image-3-345x195.jpeg 345w, https:\/\/remotion.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/image-3-364x205.jpeg 364w, https:\/\/remotion.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/image-3-320x180.jpeg 320w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1386px) 100vw, 1386px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<em>Figure&nbsp;3: The second coat of paint is being applied.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As time went on&nbsp;the efficiency of the operation increased rapidly.&nbsp;The crew got to&nbsp;experience both what was working well and what needed improvements, both with the equipment and&nbsp;with the operational procedures. Removing the paint with the Ultra-High Pressure&nbsp;washer was particularly good, and at one point we reached&nbsp;around&nbsp;22&nbsp;m<sup>2<\/sup>&nbsp;of paint removed per hour!&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the end, the test was a success;&nbsp;both because we proved that our technology works in the real&nbsp;and imperfect&nbsp;world,&nbsp;but more importantly because we have learnt a lot about&nbsp;the strengths and weaknesses of our own system and technology.
